We all know that a good photographer is worth their weight in gold, but it is also important to get the right photographer for the job. Every scenario is different, and therefore has different things that need to be emphasized. A perfect example applies to a wedding photographer. The obvious requirements are that they photographer can take great shots, has a quality camera, etc. What is not as obvious is that a photographer at a wedding needs to be very outgoing and a leader. Neither the bride and groom, nor the parents or any other participants in the wedding are thinking about the photos, but they sure will be afterwards. All the important participants and family are going to want to have plenty of pictures of themselves with the bride and Groom. An easy mistake for a photographer to make is to take a lot of pictures of the bride with her father, and only a couple of the bride with her mother. Her mother will be upset.

In order to do an adequate job, the photographer needs to interview the key people, and learn who are the most important people. Throughout the wedding and reception the photographer knows who to focus the most of their attention on. Another consideration is to have a list of all the groups that need to be photographed together. Both sets of parents will want a formal picture taken with the bride and groom, the bride by herself, etc. Because all families are unique, this will also need to be discussed with the key people a head of time. Most often the key person is the one paying the photographer.

These same principles need to be applied to other areas of photography as well. A commercial photographer in Miami is going to have a different expertise and systems than does a family portrait photographer that only does studio work.

Once you have found the photographer you want, the next step is to discuss the specifics with them, and obviously the pricing. Make sure you know exactly what you are getting for the cost. Is there a limit to the number of pictures, or are you paying for a set number of hours? What about the negatives, and the copyright restrictions on the photos. There are plenty of arrangements that can be made. Make sure you know what they are before you hire them and write them a check.
