Accidents at work not only happen in factories or construction sites, they can happen in an office. The accident can be minor in nature or it can be a major accident. But what you should do in case an accident at work happens is to raise the alarm and call for help. If anybody has suffered an injury and requires medical attention, you must call for an ambulance. In case a fire breaks out the fire brigade must be called.

All work places have to abide by safety regulations that have been specified by the local authorities. The safety authorities visit work premises to ensure that the safety regulations are being implemented. In case a work place is not following safety regulations the authorities may issue a warning or close down the work place. High risk workplaces are more stringently regulated.

If an accident at work occurs the first reaction should be to ensure that the place where the accident has occurred is made off-limits and the concerned authorities are informed. In case a person has spilt any harmful material on themselves, they should immediately be taken to a safety shower and made to take a shower. In the case of a gas leak the windows and doors should be opened and the place evacuated. If there is a fire the premises must be evacuated immediately. If an accident at work occurs, the first reaction of people is to panic and this can cause further accidents or untimely aid being given to anyone who has sustained an injury in the accident. Keeping a cool head and knowing how to handle an accident at work requires practice. Factories, laboratories, and even offices carry out safety drills. The staff are trained in how to react if an accident occurs. This continuous practice teaches employees to know exactly what they are supposed to do in case of an accident. Without learning how to handle accidents at work they can lead to neglect and further accidents. For example, shifting an injured person may cause further injury to the person. Therefore it is necessary to be properly trained in handling accidents.

After an accident at work occurs the employer will usually conduct an investigation to find out the cause of the accident. Once the cause is determined they will revise the safety regulations to ensure that the incident does not recur. They may also change workplace equipment to make it safer for workers. In the case of a major accident at work the police or the safety authority may investigate the accident to determine why it occurred.

Compensation for accidents at work is paid out by employers or the insurance company. If an employee has sustained injuries due to improper training, faulty equipment, he or she can file a compensation claim. Most employers compensate employees who suffer any injury during work. It only in those rare cases where the employee was at fault, that the employer may not compensate them. The nature and compensation will depend on the type of accident that occurred.
