There is currently no law on door to door marketing to protect those most vulnerable and susceptible to being ripped off, which is something that needs to be addressed and changed by the government in its next manifesto.
There have been a number of incidents in the news where elderly people have been held hostage and robbed by bogus door to door sale persons and there really is no need in the modern day and age for sales men or women to head round the streets performing door to door marketing.
With the current wave of technology where companies can advertise through TV adverts, the internet, directory listing, teletext, plus a number of other mediums, why are companies still insistent that door to door marketing is a viable option?
Maybe if the government were to force companies to sign a new deal banning door to door sales then these incidents would become far less common on the news. Another point in the argument for banning door to door marketing is the fact that people find it particularly annoying and it just serves to waste their time.
Generally if people want work done on their house, for instance new doors, windows, garage door, driveway, etc... then they will utilise the resources available to them including the internet to find the best and cheapest company to perform the job. A very small percentage of residents would look to invest in modifications to their houses in a spur of the moment decision.
With a change in the law, residents could feel safe in the knowledge that there is no need to answer the door to these marketers whether they have an ID badge or not, which in all fairness is incredible easy to fake.
If companies really feel that door to door marketing generates a significant amount of revenue for their brand then there are acceptable forms of marketing. I have no problem with companies producing and mailing promotional documents through the door that allows you to look at and evaluate their product without feeling pressurised to make a decision on the spot.
It is down to the government to make the change in the industry and follow up those who disregard it with heavy penalties, the next general election is not far away and all the parties are scrabbling about for policies that will help to get the voters onside. Surely banning sales persons from your door will not only generate extra revenue for companies designing websites but help to protect the elderly and vulnerable at home.
