By 1996, the Horror genre was comatose. The movies that were being produced sucked, and ruined some of the most popular horror characters. Well, leave it to horror icon Wes Craven to revitalize the genre when he released his film Scream, which both poked fun at horror cliches while at the same time inventing its own. The film was hugely successful, and was repeatedly knocked off and spoofed by countless different groups attempting to cash in on the success of the film. When Scream 3 rolled around, many thought the reputation of the movie had been tarnished by the lackluster sequel.
However, recently, Wes Craven has confirmed that after nearly ten years, a fourth installment is in production and the three major stars of the first film, Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, and David Arquete, are returning. While the plot of the film has been kept heavily under wraps, many are expecting Craven to take on what has become popular with horror films in the past decade. After all, the horror genre has changed quite a bit in the past ten years. Here are some of the sub genres of horror that may be getting the Scream treatment, if at all.
Craven may take on the sub genre of horror that came about after a slew of Asian horror films found popularity in America, such as Ringu and Ju-On: The Grudge. But how would he go about tying it to the previous films?
Another, more believable, sub genre he could take on is that of torture porn. You know what I mean. Films like the Saw series, or the Hostel movies. Perhaps the Ghostface killer would take a more intimate approach to his new set of victims?
But all of this is pure speculation. There is no guarantee that the film will not be simply a continuation of the original trilogy. This could even be an attempt to bring slashers back to prominence in horror, as recent forays into that particular sub genre have been very unsuccessful. If Craven does return, however, then the bar will be set very high for the new film, which is also expected to kick start a new trilogy of Scream films, but that would have to depend on whether or not this fourth installment will be successful or not. Fans should remain positive, as Craven has shown that when he takes time off from a franchise and returns, such as with New Nightmare, it is usually great.
