Home utility expenses, like electricity prices, keep increasing month after month. We are not even aware how much we have to shell out till the bill is dropped in our letter box. Other utility expenses like telephone bills, water bills and gas bills too increase our monthly expenditure. It is important to mention here that these home utility bills take a heavy toll on our monthly expenses.
Many of us are now approaching the problem of electricity bills more seriously as it has reached a stage when it is eating up a major part of our income. Electricity prices can be controlled and managed well if we can be a little more prudent in using electricity. Simple things like turning of lights before leaving the room, prudent use of fans, geysers, and adopting eco friendly gadgets help in bringing down our electricity bill considerably. Other measures like subscribing to a cheaper electricity provider could be another good and viable option.
The increase in the prices of petrol and petroleum products, and natural resources (which give us power to run our electrical gadgets), has led to a steep increase in the electricity prices. The electricity prices went up substantially last year and the reason cited was that the cost of natural resources fuelling and enabling the generation of electricity had gone up substantially. This led to many customers like us opting for cheap electricity suppliers despite the problems faced in switching suppliers.
If this process had not been executed properly, we could have been hit with double bills - from the existing as well as the new energy supplier. We as harried consumers still did not mind taking the risk and committed ourselves to new suppliers as we found the existing prices just beyond our reach.
Noticing this disturbing trend, many electricity providers started bringing down their rates so that they do not lose out on their already existing customers - forget roping in new customers.
This is definitely good news for many of us since we can at least hope to see bills that have smaller amounts and something that we can manage to pay.
Another important factor that made the energy providers reconsider the pricing was the intervention of the regulators in deciding to find out whether the increases in the electricity prices were justified or whether the input costs were touted as just an excuse to fleece the consumer through a cartel formation on the part of the energy providers. The report did not show the energy providers in bad light. It nevertheless mentioned that just as increases were passed on when input costs went up, the same should go down as well and the benefits must get passed on to the consumer when the input costs reduced. The energy providers are now trying to be fair about the pricing and that is how electricity prices have come down as compared to some months back.
All said and done, it is up to us to manage our electricity consumption in a better manner and be more prudent in its usage to avoid high electricity bills.
