If you work at a home care agency it can be a very physically and emotionally demanding job. When you care for elderly or ill patients in their homes you will find that they and their families will rely very heavily on you for support throughout this difficult time. That is way you must always take care of yourself, both mentally and physically.

When someone has a stressful job and works long hours, burnout is a common danger. When that occurs, many seek the help of counselors or doctors to help them through the situation.

The key to overcoming burnout is to simply step out of the situation and take a look at it from the outside in. Herein I will review some of the recommended steps for overcoming burnout.

Often, the first piece of advice given in the event of a burnout is: never take your work home with you. If at all possible, leave it at the office. But what happens when someone works not with paperwork and figures, but with people?

In these cases, what you need to remember is to try and break the cycle of twenty-four hour worry and concern. You need to have empathy and compassion to do your job well, but fretting about patients round the clock will leave you emotionally drained. And most of your patients are going to depend on you for emotional stability.

You will also be asked to do a lot of physical chores, from lifting to bathing to exercising your clients. You?ll have to be physically fit, so make sure that you are exercising, eating right, and getting plenty of sleep. This way you?ll be able to maintain a positive attitude and be fit to deal with any crises that may come up.

Another part of staying healthy when you work for a home care agency is to understand how to cope with all the ups and downs that are part of the job. Part of working in home health care is dealing with deaths, sorrow, distraught or angry patients and relatives, and much more. You have to have a calm manner and a clear head. Do what you have to in order to maintain a good attitude.

In those times when burnout seems looming like a dark shadow on the horizon, a home care agency provider should review their life to see where they possibly went wrong. They should review these questions periodically: Am I "taking my work home" with me? Am I exercising, eating well, and sleeping enough? Do I know how to unwind and step back from trying moments?
