Energy prices are on the rise and it is becoming increasingly difficult for households to keep monthly energy expenses on a tight leash. Comparing energy prices from different service providers and switching to the less costly ones is an option that many consumers are trying out and succeeding to some extent. A more sustainable plan needs to be worked out so that this problem can be addressed more effectively.
One option is going for green and renewable sources of energy, which are not only good for the environment but also effective in decreasing your monthly expenses towards energy. You will also get the satisfaction of having contributed your bit towards reducing the carbon footprint. This can be achieved by generating your own power requirements through the DIY kits which would help you to put up solar panels and wind turbines.
They may cost you initially but you will be able to recover the cost pretty quickly. Moreover, you may even get incentive checks from the electricity producing companies. But this may or may not appeal to everybody and is a matter of personal choice.
There are however, certain ideas that all of us can put into practice that will assist us in achieving our objectives of cutting down on energy expenses. They may appear very practical and simple but are rarely followed by consumers. These require some adjustment, time and effort but they are well worth it.
They are as follows:
a) Lessen the intensity of heat that is coming in through the windows by putting in place double pane windows and other kinds of sunshades, sunscreens and even plants facing the sun. This will mean that your room remains cooler and you may not need to use the air conditioner for as long as you may be using currently.
b) Cut down on the usage of water by installing showerheads and toilet cisterns that either utilise less water or restrict the flow of water such that the water used is minimal and not wasted. Simple things like turning off the tap while brushing your teeth and watering the grass in the early morning or after sunset are other adjustments that you can make.
c) While washing clothes, desist from using the clothes dryer to dry the clothes and dry them out in the sun if possible. Washing machines and dryers consume a lot of electricity, which is next in power only to the AC. They also require other sources like water, cleansers and gas, making them high energy guzzlers.
d) Switch off the computer when not in use or make sure they are set to consume low power. These machines tend to heat quickly and you would need to cool the atmosphere to maintain them in top working condition. That again is a drain on the energy resources and is going to escalate your power bills.
e) Check for lights and fans that have been left on in rooms and ensure that the door is closed, to trap cool air within the room where an AC is being used.
