The purpose and intention of the promotional items handed out at conventions by marketers is to make a lasting impression of their potential customers. Just imagine that you are walking the halls of a convention center and you approaching a booth where people are handing out small plush looking toys that are shaped like cars. The puffy shape and uniform design of the small toy bears the name of the company handing out the items and as you reach out to accept the puffy car shaped object you realize that it is not a toy at all. In your hand you hold an object that feels like a firm pillow wrapped in a plastic film.
What you have just picked up from the convention exhibitor is not a toy, neither is it a small pillow, in fact what you have been given is a compressed shirt that has been molded to resemble a miniature car shaped pillow. On the outside of the packaging is the name of the company exhibiting at the expo and as you open the plastic wrap to take a better look at the design it begins to expand and unfold and you quickly realize that what you were given as you stopped to examine the new gadgets and products on display at the booth, was actually a tee shirt that has now regained its original shape.
The compressed shirt inside the puffy shape of the car is in fact a promotional item that is intended to be kept and worn by the attendees visiting the exhibitors booth at the convention that you have been sent to by the company you work for. Upon closer examination of the tee shirt you become aware of how clever it is that the exhibitors packaged the tee shirt in such a unique way, and you think to yourself how clever it is that they have chosen to brand themselves with the use of a compressed shirt. As you return to your hotel at the end of the day your are still thinking about the tee shirt you picked up and more specifically about the unique and attractive packaging that drew you in to take a closer look at the product offerings at the display booth.
You reaction is very much the same as others that first encounter the compressed shirt at a convention or tradeshow. While other exhibitors where handing out pens and buttons with their logo and slogan stamped onto them this company chose to brand themselves with a unique approach to corporate promotional products that remains with the prospective consumer long after they have left the convention center. Remembering the brand and having a souvenir from the exhibitor leaves a lasting impression on the minds of many convention attendees that make purchasing decisions for their employers, and that is the objective of the promotional giveaways that can be found at the tradeshow booths throughout the world.
