The switch energy concept was introduced in the United Kingdom several years ago, when the market for energy was opened up to international competition. This has followed the deregulation act of the European Union with the aim of deregulating the electricity and gas market sectors. There are varying degrees of the concepts growth in the member states of the union, but in the United Kingdom, energy suppliers already have a deregulated market. The kind of competition that resulted has paved the way for some heated controversies, but the service continued to flourish.

Now, it is not surprising to come across energy switching services on the Internet.

Companies that promote the switch energy concept are usually operating on a commission scheme. For every client that they manage to convince to switch to their supplier company, a corresponding commission rate is given to them. Because the industry remains the source of controversial energy issues, a supervisory body for gas and electricity use in the United Kingdom issued a code of conduct. These codes were meant to impose some semblance of order in the industry. Under it, a company must ensure that, firstly, the switching company is independent of a gas or electricity company. They are prohibited from advertising such companies and to state whatever commission they receive for switch energy clients. Secondly, they must do price comparisons of the taxes incurred by all their dealers including fuel suppliers. Next is, all switching companies are required to have their own websites that should use their own tax database and calculator. Then, all the payment schemes that they offer to their clients and prospects must have standard credit options through cash or check. Aside from these payment should also be done by direct debit and prepayment meters.

The next requirement is that five of their cheapest suppliers must be listed. All prices on the list must include a value added tax or VAT. Service quality and energy efficiency schemes must also be provided for the public together with price comparisons. In addition, it is also required of switch energy companies to give a statement of price updates. Although these codes of conduct are voluntary, it is expected by the community that the various switching firms operating in the United Kingdom adhere to these principles. It is also hoped that it will stop the heated arguments that are caused by the deregulation of the gas and energy industry.

The concept of energy switching has opened up many opportunities on the gas and energy market. It has brought many outside players to the competition, which gave an option to consumers to choose their suppliers, thereby aiding in the lowering of energy cost. But as in any other industry, the process requires that switch energy firms police its own members; so as to better service the community it serves. In so doing, the future of the industry and the community will remain mutually beneficial to one another, and create a better economy for the country as a whole.
