In just a few short years, website programmers as they exist now will be on the verge of extinction. If you are a programmer, you may want to sit down for this. Before you dismiss this article as garbage, I will clarify and explain that website programmers themselves will be busy as ever, however, their role will drastically change in the next several years. This is all do to the open source movement.

For the purpose of this article, this will be explained in terms of the well known content management system named Joomla. For the typical business owner who only knows that his business needs a website, he may not know the behind the scenes differences in a website that is coded from scratch, compared to an identical website that was created using Joomla. What is the real difference then? Well, a big difference is the time frame required to complete the work. What Joomla allows you to do is create a website by piecing it together using components for Joomla that were previously programmed. For example, if you want to include an interactive Google maps feature on a website, a Google maps module may be installed that makes it a breeze to put anywhere on the website.

When you take a step back and look at what this does to the world of website design, it is monumental. A website that would normally cost a business many thousands of dollars because of the hundreds of hours it would take programmers, now only takes ten or fifteen hours. Website design companies can offer amazing websites for much more affordable prices.

What does this mean for the career of a website programmer? Well, for programmers to stay profitable, they will need to follow the moving cheese, and begin programming Joomla components. We will still need their brain power to make the behind the scenes products, however, they will only have to program each feature once. Components will be modified over time as well, making websites better and better.

In summary, because websites now can have whatever look and feel the business owner wants, by piecing together all the components, modules and plugins they need, which have been previously been programmed, professional websites can be completed in a fraction of the time. Website designers can charge much less as well as increase their profit margins as a result of increased efficiency. On the back end, the business owner will like the control they have over their website because the content management system is so easy to use.
