So You Want To Move To The Country--What Now?

I grew up in the heart of Phoenix, Arizona, so I was always used to an urban environment. After enjoying a few years in busy, bustling Orange County, California, I thought I was perfectly suited to the city.

But when I moved to northern Utah in an area close to the countryside, I fell in love. I realized I had been "settling," when there was so much more for me in this semi-rural region. Do you feel the same? Is there a sense of longing within you whenever you pass a meadow or patch of trees by the freeway?

Moving to the countryside has tremendous benefits. Though poor economic conditions have slowed some development in rural areas, there are still some states that are flourishing. This means you can typically purchase more house for less money.

Along the same lines, you can often afford more land than you may have thought. If you have been craving a large yard in which children and pets can have plenty of room to play, this may just be the solution for you.

Plus, you will be able to enjoy a quieter and even potentially safer environment. But before you rush to the realtor to put your house up for sale, you need to make some careful considerations.

You may only be planning to move outside of your city and retain your current job, but if that is the case, you certainly need to take the commute into account.

For example: a cousin of mine recently moved to a developing community beyond the mountains. While it is peaceful area, there is only one two-lane road that allows access to the city in which he works.

During the winter, ice and snow can potentially cause closure of this road, preventing him from getting to work and stranding him within his home, far from everything--even gas stations and grocery stores.

You have to weigh your own personal pros and cons. If you have children, you will want to find out if they will need to change schools, where the bus stops are, and how long it will take them to get to class.

On top of all that, you especially need to select a region that is still economically viable. Call me biased, but the state of Utah is doing tremendously well despite economic setbacks. Movers in Utah have virtually unlimited experience working with young families and elderly couples, all searching for more peace and sanity in a rural region.

Like I said, you have to be the one to weigh the pros and cons. Remember that an area that is currently rural may explode with economic activity in the future, so decide what you really hope to get out of your residential experience and plan accordingly.
