Auto insurance is mandatory in the state of Maine. Motorists are required to have liability, uninsured motorist, and medical payment coverage. The amounts should be 50/100/25 or a combined single limit of $125,000. A driver cannot register their car without proper Maine auto insurance.

For drivers aged fifty five and older that have completed a motor vehicle accident prevention course, Maine law must provide discounts for medical payments, liability, and collision. The course must be an approved course. In order to continue the discount the course must be completed every three years.

There are a few discounts that apply. One of them is having multiple cars under the same household, which makes it more cost effective for the insurance companies. Drivers who have completed driver education courses also get discounts with some agencies.

Cars with anti-theft devices are at a lower risk for theft and therefore also candidates for discounts, as well as those with low mileage. The less the car is driven, the less chances there will be an accident. Drivers with a good record who renew their insurance policy with the same insurer also receive discounts.

Optional insurances are collision, which covers physical damage to the car, which is not mandatory but may be required when financing or leasing a car. Another optional insurance is comprehensive, which covers the car from all damages that arise other than collision, such as fire, weather, theft and floods. These insurances cost more and are up to the driver to consider if their car is worth being covered or not and paying a higher premium.

Shop around various maine auto insurance providers in your area to find the best deal for you. Check the yellow pages, internet, and friends and family for referrals to find an insurance agent that fits your needs.

Some insurance companies also offer rental reimbursement in case of an accident, and will pay a certain amount per day for a rental while your car is being repaired. Another optional and fairly inexpensive coverage is towing coverage, which will cover the cost of a tow if needed.

Always check the fees and cancellation policies to make sure the terms are clear in case you need to switch providers in the middle of your coverage. Some insurance companies may charge a fee for this. There may be a fee for automatic withdrawals as well, though some providers may actually give a discount for this option.
