Today we find one of the biggest expenses in our lives may well be the high cost of energy, used to warm and light our homes. Whether it is by gas or electricity, you need to keep warm in winter and cool in summer. Additionally, home lighting requires electricity and all of these are costly. It may be helpful to compare energy prices to determine where any savings can be realised.

There are over two thousand power stations spread throughout the United Kingdom that generate our energy. The source of this power comes from either gas, coal, or nuclear energy, while about four percent is derived from renewable energy, and this includes hydro power and wind energy supplied by wind farms.
Since regulation (performed in 1999) all UK consumers are able to choose who supplies the electricity and gas to them.

Many now have a dual fuel plan by which they obtain both electricity and gas from the same supplier. This is generally cheaper than using only one type of fuel, for example what occurs in an all-electric home. There are discounts when your home is operating on a dual fuel program as well, because the suppliers offer reduced rates when on such plans.

The plans offered by most energy suppliers will offer different prices based on a pricing structure for electricity and gas. There are standard plans, as well as the following options:

* Economy 7 plans - Electricity that is used during the night time hours is charged at cheaper rates.
* Fixed plan - the cost of each energy unit is fixed and set for a certain period of time.
* Green plans - designed to help in combating climate change.
* Capped plans - the prices of each unit of energy will be fixed for a given period of time.
* Online plans - are handled strictly via the internet, handling your energy account completely over the internet.
* Business energy plan - are designed for those who use energy commercially.
* Social plans - designed to assist those who have proven to be vulnerable consumers who have difficulty paying their energy bills.

The Economy 7 plan saves money by charging less for night time usage of energy. Typically the heaviest usage of both gas and electricity occurs during day time hours. This will require a change in your energy meter to one that reads both day and night time usage. The standing or fixed charge stays the same from day to day and pays for keeping your home or business supplied with the energy, not dependent upon the amount of usage.

The online plans are not only money savers, they will save a lot of time because you can handle your entire bill and account on the internet instead of going to the power company, phoning them, or mailing them the bill. Paying online requires a direct debit payment but this saves you postage. Additionally many of the utility companies give discounts for handling your account this way.

When you compare energy prices keep in mind the coming thing of course is green energy so wind, hydro (water), and solar are going to replace our current energy sources very soon.
