There is an increasing number of police abuse cases and harassment meted out to the public by the men in uniform, the police. Police are no longer acting as public servants and are taking undue advantage of their rights. Some of them are using these rights to their advantage, which has resulted in an increasing rate of police atrocities. It is high time actions against police be taken, so that the public are protected and safeguarded against such highhanded behaviour.

Law enforcers are becoming law breakers, thanks to the powers endowed on them by the authorities. Though the number of abusive police officers on duty is less in number, there are authorities that know about these officers and still maintain a stoic silence. These authorities are equally to blame and stringent actions need to be taken against these authorities as well.

Failures to take action against such abusive officers have resulted in the public losing trust and confidence in the law making authority and consider the authorities to be another enemy.

The public have slowly started raising their voice against such atrocities of the police and the authorities have no other option, but to take actions against police officers who fail in their duty to protect the public.
Given below are some rules that can help you deal peacefully with law enforcement.
The authorities have released the list, which would aid citizens on how to behave if the police stop or question you. This list, though not very definitive, provides straightforward rules on how to deal efficiently with law enforcement.

* When a police officer stops your car while driving, ensure that you choose the right words and maintain your calm. Resist from getting into an argument or losing your temper. Do not protest or grumble, as it could worsen matters. Demand for a lawyer so that you do not make statements that will put you into further trouble. Ensure that you jot down the name of the officer, his badge number, van number and so on. If you are able to find witnesses, write down their names and telephone numbers. Violation of rights calls for filing a complaint at the civilian complaint board or at the police department. If you are wounded, then you should take photographs of the injury for submitting it to the authorities.

* If you are stopped by the police when driving, you need to produce your car registration and driving licence only upon request. Check out whether the police have a search warrant. In many cases, the police are entitled to search the vehicle even without a warrant, so you cannot do much about it. If the police issue you a ticket, then do not be fussy about signing it, or else you could get arrested. You could later sort things out in court. If it is alleged that you have taken alcohol while driving, then do not refuse to give your blood and urine samples, as this behaviour on your part could get your driving licence suspended.

If you get arrested, then you should summon for an attorney to speak on your behalf and never speak to the police directly, as it could complicate things further.
