Originally, Tennessee was state that did not require that you had insurance for your car as long as you were able to prove that you were able to financially cope with an accident should it occur. Over recent years, however, the Tennessee auto insurance laws have begun to change significantly and now have a lot more favour with those who have been hit by driver that do not have the necessary insurance.
It is now the case that there is a minimum liability that is required by the state when you go out on the road and this protects what is done to the other driver and not yourself. If you do choose, however, to get comprehensive coverage then you will be able to protect yourself as well as anyone else that you happen to hit.
In the state is deemed a privilege that you are able to drive out on the roads and therefore you are held responsible to uphold that privilege and treat it as such. If you have a vehicle then you need to have a coverage of 20/50/10 but you are not required to have things like personal injury protection or any sort of physical protection for your vehicle.
So you might wonder what would happen to you if you did not have insurance? well, the department of motor vehicles in the state is well informed of all of the cancellations and non re-newels within the state. Whenever your vehicle might be stopped for whatever reason, the officer will always ask you for proof of your insurance with the vehicle that you are driving.
If you are not able to show this then you will be subject to receive large fines, and your license being revoked depending on the circumstances. If you do not have a valid license then this can go even further and your vehicle can be taken and impounded and you may even have to go to jail for a short time.
Therefore it remains critical in the state that you make sure that you are covered at least to the minimum level. If you do not use your car that often then getting the lowest level of coverage might be the best idea. However, comprehensive coverage should always be taken if you are someone who frequently uses the car.
These are just a few notes on getting car insurance in the state of Tennessee.
