There are housing associations scattered all across the UK. These associations are setup by the government, but are run more like private companies and are designed to provide fair and helpful services for renters and even potential homebuyers. The services they provide vary, as each housing association is setup to meet the specific needs of the area which they service. However, most of these associations provide some common services such as those discussed below.

Social Landlord Services

Many housing associations manage whole neighbourhoods of rental properties. As such, they are responsible for standard landlord duties such as collecting rent, maintaining and fixing properties and matching potential tenants to properties. However, their duties go much further than that.

As a social landlord that works in partnership with the government, they setup rent structures for tenants that are affordable and fair; ensuring that the tenant is paying a good rate while ensuring that enough is paid into the system to account for upkeep and long term economic viability of the entire housing association. From the perspective of maintaining the neighbourhood, the typical association is better than virtually any typical landlord, in response time and quality of repair.

Other Benefits

Many of the associations around the UK have the flexibility and power to make sure that their communities are safe, clean, modern, and environmentally sound as well. Once they take over an area to revitalise, they are given permission to tear down older, unsafe, and worn out structures and build thoroughly modern and well thought out buildings that maximise space. The latest structures have also been designed with a focus on the environment. From using materials that are environmentally friendly during construction, to design cues that minimise the environmental impact of the building, the associations are on the cutting edge of environmental design.

On top of the buildings, the associations are able to plan entire communities, guaranteeing that an area does not only have excellent living spaces but also has community services as well. When a group of old buildings is demolished, in its place are thoroughly modern buildings with modern landscaping as well as parks and areas of natural beauty. A new neighbourhood will be able to hold more people and provide them with a far better quality of life than in the older run down one. Parks are added as well as recreation facilities for the neighbourhood residents such as courts for tennis and other racquet sports, fields for soccer, rugby and cricket and some even have swimming facilities that guarantee that the individual or family in the neighbourhood has access to exercise and fun.

The neighbourhoods also offer ownership opportunities. For the person that has settled into a place and decides they wish to someday own their home or condominium residence, the association has options available for people like this. Shared ownership, where the owner pays for ownership but still pays for maintenance services on the home is the most popular option; balancing the desire for ownership with the ability to still call for service should something in the home go awry.
