Late last night I was bored and looking for something to watch on the internet and came across a documentary about the impact of the digital age on society. They focused on children and how the internet, personal digital assistants, and cell phones are impacting the way children and students learn, or fail to learn, their lessons in school. They showed how students who pride themselves on multitasking are actually less effective at both multitasking and focusing on single tasks.
On the other hand, it was pointed out that with every new technology, something from the technology that preceded it is lost. With the advent of convenient writing, writ memory suffered, and now, with information technology being so prevalent, attention span and retention are also lessened. With everything at our fingertips, we feel less urgency to load things into our brains. Why take the time and effort when I can access the same information by clicking a button and searching for keywords?
Of course, as we begin to rely more and more on our computer and information technology, the more it must become portable and durable. It had to be able to travel, take the same hits and blows that we take as we go throughout our day, and be conveniently accessed whenever we desire. This was made really evident in the documentary when they demonstrated how technology has changed the face of warfare, with everything from drone ships equipped with long range weaponry to enhancements in ground based tracking and offensive technology. These things are being used right now, and game style mock ups are being used as recruitment tools in malls and other locations by the United States Armed Forces. I thought it was all pretty interesting.
I pride myself on being fully wired, with my cell phone, lap top, desk top, and home computer more or less integrated. I receive messages from my several social networks several times a day, and converse with people all over the world via text messaging, email, and voice over internet protocol. Basically, any time, day or night, I am a part of the internet. If any of these systems break down, I could lose money and vital social connections. Our equipment must be durable enough to handle the use we put on it, and rugged portable computer systems are an important part of the plans my family and I have for the future.
