Everyone has had problems with their kitchen plumbing at one point or another. The garbage disposal is very handy for getting rid of bits of produce, but it can have a lot of problems as well.

One of the common complaints about the garbage disposal is the odor that exudes from it. Even though the kitchen is pristinely clean, it smells like it has been moldering in a swamp for three years.

This bad smell is a result of spoiled food and bacteria buildup within the garbage disposal. Food is very easily trapped in the blades, under the lid, and in any other corners and crevices.

Onions and garlic are especially odorous. There are several tricks that can be tried to clean out the garbage disposal and get rid of the smell. However, make sure that none of these suggestions conflict with the garbage disposal handbook before you try them.

One of the easiest tricks is to purchase a few lemons, limes, or oranges at the local grocery market. Then chop them up and throw them in the garbage disposal while they are grinding.

The scent of citrus fruit will permeate the entire room. This fix may not be permanent, but it is a great save during a party.

The second thing to try is throwing ice cubes down the garbage disposal while it is chopping. This will help wash out the crevices and corners that you cannot reach.

In addition, the ice cubes can sharpen the garbage disposal blades on their way down. If this does not work, pour half a cup of distilled white vinegar down the garbage disposal while cold water is running.

Or pour a cup of dry baking soda and a cup of distilled white vinegar down the drain. The baking soda will neutralize any acids that are left in the garbage disposal and effectively get rid of the smell.

Most hospitals, restaurants, and other public service locations depend on bleach for their cleaners. While bleach has its own smell, it will get rid of the rotting food odor rising from your sink.

Mild bleach, roman cleanser, or slightly fragrant bleach is all that you need to effectively clean your sink. Pour the bleach down the drain with running cold water.

Now that the drain is clean, it will be important to clean off the lid of the garbage disposal. This task will only require a simple soap, water, and brush.

Similar to the lemon, lime, orange fix you might want to try pouring a little Mint Extract down the sink drain. This will give you a pristine, crisp, mint smell to replace the molding rot that was experienced earlier.

Be sure that you clean the disposal first so that the rotting smell does not come back. Once you pour the mint extract down the drain, let it sit there for a couple hours so the drain absorbs the new smell.

When you do rinse it out, the fresh smell should be present for several days to come. Cleaning the garbage disposal out should happen every couple weeks, whether or not a disgusting odor is present.

The bacteria and rotting food can release spores that are very unhealthy for you and your family. Cleaning the garbage disposal can protect your family from these harmful spores.

Cleaning the sink is also very beneficial to preserving the health of your family. For the best results and a very clean sink, start by filling the sink to brim with water.

Then add a little bleach and let it rest for an hour. When this hour passes, let the sink drain and rinse it out.

Use a common cleaner, such as Comet, to scrub out the sink. Then rinse the sink again.

Take a toothbrush and scrub around the base of the faucet. Rinse the sink one more time and dry.

Preserving a healthy sink, garbage disposal, and plumbing will help keep your family healthy and ban odors from your kitchen.
