Life as a fisherman can be extremely difficult. It is considered one of the most dangerous professions. Most workers are required to work long hours and in dangerous conditions. Storms can arise quickly and cause deadly consequences. Large waves could capsize a boat or carry men overboard. They also have all the equipment to worry about as well. Heavy and powerful equipment can be dangerous in the volatile conditions. You can also consider the emotional toll that working on a boat can cause. You are on the same boat for weeks on end with no relief or downtime. Most likely have to cook your own food and have very small living quarters. The pay may be good but as some popular realty TV shows have shown, this profession takes a special breed.

Oil drilling can also be considered a dangerous profession. In a split second or by making an incorrect decision you or a coworker could suffer injury or death. In these types of work environments injury are typically very severe if not fatal. Life as an oil driller may not be as dangerous as that of a fisherman but it still has its hazards. Many oil rig workers can make very good money. Some may work on off or on shore rigs. Offshore oil rigs offer a secluded feel like that of a boat, but a perk is that many may have off shore catering. The off shore living quarters are most likely better than most boats as well. They may have access to services that make life a little more bearable. Regardless, the dangers are prevalent in both occupations.

You can really weigh the pros and cons of these two dangerous occupations and debate which you would prefer. It might come down to which offers better pay or offers the better work schedule. What you see on TV and the actual act of performing these jobs are two different things. If you are considering a job with a higher than normal fatality rate then you may want to consider what you could lose. Life on an oil rig is most likely safer than life as a fisherman, but you will want to consider your family and the time you will have to give up with them.
