In the new home building business there is a lot of new building materials that are coming out all of the time. The drive to be more and more energy efficient and more environmentally friendly has driven to new products being designed and new ideas on how to build a home.

One of the areas where there has been a lot of improvements over the years is in the roofing materials. Though the roof from home to home may not look any different there has been a lot of changes in the way the roof is installed and in the underlayment of the shingles. Some of these improvements were designed to better prevent leaks in the roof and to make the roof last a lot longer.

Roofing is one of the hardest industries to be a part of. Working to install a new roof can be almost unbearable in the summertime. You may notice that the roofing crews will start work as early as legally allowed so that they can be done before the hottest part of the day.

Working on a roof is also a very dangerous job. There is always the possibility of falling off of the roof. It is important that the roofers take every precaution that they should and are required to by law. Not only will this keep a roofer safer, but it will also prevent them from being fined by Osha for not following the safety requirements.

When you are building a new home you will need to decide on the color of the chingles that you have installed. When planning the home design, you will also need to plan the pitch of the roof. Engineers will tell you a minimum pitch that the roof will need to have in order to function properly in the part of the country where it is located. However, the homeowner can request it to be a steeper pitch roof. There are some advantages to this, but this is mostly done to achieve a certain look to the home.

There are other alternatives to a roof other than the typical asphalt shingles that you see on most homes. There are clay shake shingles, wood shake shingles, metal roofs and polyurethane roofs as well, though that type of a roof is most common in a commercial building, such as a restaurant. Which kind of roof you have on your new home is up to you.
