Engineers will tell you a minimum pitch that the roof will need to have in order to function properly in the part of the country where it is located. However, the homeowner can request it to be a steeper pitch roof. There are some advantages to this, but this is mostly done to achieve a certain look to the home.
There are other alternatives to a roof other than the typical asphalt shingles that you see on most homes. There are clay shake shingles, wood shake shingles, metal roofs and polyurethane roofs as well, though that type of a roof is most common in a commercial building, such as a restaurant. Which kind of roof you have on your new home is up to you.
