There are many things that are not fair in life. For some, that unfairness comes in the form of a learning disability. Many kids have this from a young age and for some, it is a permanent part of their life. Some will make it all the way through school this way and in most cases would not even think about going to college. They usually have endured plenty of teasing throughout their school career to last a lifetime. Going to college for most of them is the last thing that they want to do.
However, there are some that are determined to not let this get to them and they desire to go to college so that they can get a better job and carve out a better life for themselves. One of the reasons that this may be the case for some is the influence of their parents, teachers and friends around them. If they have enough positive influence telling them that they can, then they will be more likely to make the decision to go to college.
The stumbling block for them at that point is finding a college where they are accepted in. They can put as many applications as they would like into any college, but they might find rejection in a lot of places.
There are some colleges that have built their entire school around servicing these kind of students. The teachers, the curriculum and everything that they can control is geared for the students with learning disabilities. They do everything that they can to make sure that these students find success in college that will help them accomplish their goals in life. This can be a great way to break the cycle of failure that they have felt their whole life and put them on the course of believing and success. This is not only success as we know it, but more importantly in their eyes. This will create the belief in themselves that they desperately need to alter the course of their future.
There are more and more services coming along that tailor to this part of our society. We are learning a lot more about the things that face these children, including those with ADHD and how to then counteract it and present things in a way that they can learn a lot better. We are doing a better job with it, though we need to continue on that path to improve more.
