First up, let`s get one thing clear. You can go and listen to every motivational speaker in the country, but at the end of the day they can only encourage, the only person who can motivate you is you. Reason and motivation can mean the same or the opposite, depending on the circumstances. The new diet, you want to lose weight to look good and feel good, that`s the reason, but what is your motivation? Is should be the desire and longing to improve yourself, if you want to lose weight to please others you won`t have the self motivation, so will more than likely be unsuccessful. So motivation is basically the urge to improve yourself for yourself.

If there is a possible promotion at work that your partner is urging you to go for, but there is hours of extra work involved which greatly reduces your family time, you need to decide if you have a reason or the motivation. We all want to please our mates, but that shouldn`t be at the expense of making ourselves unhappy. If you want this promotion as a stepping stone to greater things and want the self satisfaction of moving up the career ladder, then go for it, you have both the motivation and reason. If you just have reason, forget it, you don`t really want it and can`t spend your life trying to please other people.

In a nutshell, everything that presents itself to you that you will have to work hard at boils down to this. Sit down and really think about why you want to do this. Take your time, and write it down if it helps. If you have a great personal longing and desire to succeed, then you probably will.

There are different reasons for motivation. If you are basically a couch potato but want to work in one of services for example, you know to have to get off your butt and get fit. The possibility of getting into your chosen career should be all the motivation you need, if even that doesn`t stir you into action, then your career in the services isn`t a vocation, it`s just a flight of fancy. Be realistic too, if you want to lose weight for a special occasion, set yourself an achievable goal. As you get nearer that target you motivation will increase and you will get there and look and feel brilliant. If, on the other hand, the amount of the weight loss is too high, you won`t see it coming off and will get quickly frustrated and lose your motivation altogether and maybe even put on weight through comfort eating. You aren`t a failure, you have just been unrealistic, and this is a common mistake.

So know you know the difference between reason and motivation, look into your heart before embarking on any new project. Make sure that you are doing it for yourself and that you really, really want it. Don`t start on something just to please others as after time feelings of relentless will start to stir and you won`t be happy with your life. This is your motivation and you are already half way there, good luck!
