Auto insurance for teenagers may be complicated especially when they do not have their license yet. Even teens with learner permits have to have insurance in case they have an accident. Normally their permit allows them to drive with an adult and only during the day or early evening. If they have an accident out of these hours it will void their auto insurance for teens.
You as a parent will be responsible for any damages or injuries they cause to mother people or their property. It is also possible that you are sent to jail if someone dies in the accident. Your children are driving under your supervision; they are not allowed to drive alone.
Usually teenagers are included in their parents insurance policy but they include any driving restriction your teens have. Any breach of these restrictions and the insurance policy is void and worthless. They are teenagers and they are still under your control and care, you are supposed to control them and your car.
Another important factor of teen insurance is that it will usually cover the teenager driving his parents car or cars and not any other cars. Teenagers cannot have personal insurance policies even if you offer to pay for it. It works much the same as a credit card, they can be added to your card but they cannot have their own because they are not legally liable.
The only thing that you can do with regards to your teenagers is to buy additional insurance for them. In fact some of the larger insurance companies require that you do. In case that your driving record is in bad shape because of accidents or DUI or any other reason, the insurance company may refuse to insure your children.
If they do not have insurance, they cannot drive in the United States, if they do and they are caught, you may go to jail. Having a drivers license, be it a full fledge license or a learners permit is a great responsibility because the lives of other people are in your hands. Do not take this responsibility lightly and make sure your teenage children do not either.
It is important that you explain to them that their driving record is forever. It will not be erased once they become adults, any accidents or violations will be there until they die. If they make too many mistakes while they are teenage drivers insurance companies will make them pay high rates as adults just to make sure they are covered.
