Sirius radio channels are types of satellite radio channels that primarily operate in North America. Sirius is a new company--founded in 2002--which provides customers with options for almost one hundred and forty different channels to listen to. About half of these are various music stations. The other half are news stations, talk radio, sports, and miscellaneous entertainment not consisting solely of music.

Many may wonder why they should pay for radio when it is available for free in any car with proper sound equipment. Here is where Sirius radio provides a huge benefit. It is streaming, commercial free, and uncensored. It is more specified to your tastes, regardless of location in the country. This is a huge benefit for those who travel often; their favorite stations can stay with them at all times.

Many large entertainers have found a mutual benefit for them and Sirius radio by teaming up with the satellite company. Entire channels or programs can be devoted to a single star. Howard Stern, for example, has his own channel. Sirius allows these entertainers to go uncensored, which is something normal radio does not allow.

It also allows for celebrities to earn more exposure on this medium, for Sirius to gain more customers, and for customers to hear their favorite celebrities. Though Sirius itself does not put on commercials, some companies will contact the celebrities to have ad spots on during their shows. It is a rarer occurrence, but there are some commercials in this generally commercial-free system of stations.

There is enough diversity to allow for just about every preference. Sirius tries to cater to all different tastes. It is closer to the Internet radio company, Pandora, but Pandora is not available on a regular radio and does not have deejays. It is the same general concept, with different ways of refining your tastes in the search.

In this way, many people are able to focus on a single type of music they like, find a good station, and be introduced to other similar music that may suit their tastes. This is the best way for those who love music to gain exposure to many other musicians in a single sitting. Depending on the program, one can learn interesting facts about the music or find compelling radio personalities to listen to.

A great source of revenue has been in the sports department. Usually sports on the radio is a grainy-sounding report of all plays in the game. There is often little else in terms of sports entertainment on the radio. Sirius discovered a gaping hole in the market for better sports radio. People could get their fill of sports at home on specified television channels, but the radio provided little by means of full coverage or entertainment.

Sirius gained exclusive satellite radio broadcasting rights to most major sports. Both American and Canadian football (NFL and CFL) are part of this agreement, as is the NBA (American basketball). It offers a great selection of sports, too. There is car- and horse-racing coverage in addition to that of other events.
