When building a custom home or redesigning a room, one of the most important and difficult decisions to make has to do with the flooring. Hardwood flooring and carpet both have unique benefits. It all depends on what is more important to you and what type of lifestyle you lead.

With carpeting, you have a large variety of styles and colors to choose from. There are also long and short carpet types to choose from. Long carpet provides an even softer and more engulfing feel. It is ideal for bedrooms and dens. Shorter carpet gives a more professional or sophisticated look. It is ideal for offices and living areas. All forms of carpet provide a quiet solution. For a two story home, carpet is usually ideal for the second floor as sound will not travel down into the first floor as easily as with hardwood flooring.

General cleanup is usually easier with carpeted floors. Carpet can easily hide hair or dust and vacuuming only needs to be done twice a week or so. However, with hardwood flooring, hair and dust are very apparent and can be dragged throughout the house with the wind or when stepped upon. This means that hardwood floors need to be swept and mopped at least three to four times per week in order to maintain a clean floor.

Hardwood is ideal for those that have the weather elements to deal with. It does not attract stains as easily as carpet. During the spring and winter, wet shoes and clothes can easily track water into the home. This can lead to large ugly black stains on carpeted floors. These stains can be very difficult to remove and may require professional cleaning which can become rather costly. With this type of flooring, water does not cause any staining issues and can easily be wiped up with paper towels or a dry towel.

Hardwood provides a beautiful and professional look to any room. It also complements any style. In the event that you are looking to redecorate, hardwood flooring will match any decor and style. However, with carpet, you will have to make sure that you match the particular look and style of your current carpet.

There are many unique benefits to both carpeted floors and hardwood flooring. It all depends on what your particular preferences and needs are. It is always possible to carpet some floors and use hardwood other rooms of the house.
