New York State is a gorgeous location on the upper east coast of the United States with many things to do and see. If you are looking to escape the city, this is a great place to do it.

Many think that if they extend beyond the borders of Manhattan, there will be nothing to do. However, there are possibly more activities to do in the country side than in the city.

Many locals as well as new comers enjoy visiting the scenery outside the city during their visits in order to have a rich variety of things to do during their weekend excursions. Options are always a good thing when it comes to vacations, and New York State is bringing more options to your New York travel agenda.

There are many places to visit in the country portion and all of them have beauty and charm in common. All such beauties and wonders can be found within this one state as well.

Many enjoy hiking to get a greater view of the scenic country side. For some, the drive through is enough to make an ordinary travel a wondrous occasion.

One great location to visit is Bear Mountain State Park and its adjacent Harriman State Park. These are just pleasant hour long drives along the Palisades Parkway from NYC in Rockland County.

Even the roads approaching these parks have several scenic opportunities that take visitors up to mountain vistas with wondrous beauty and across a long bridge that towers over the deep valleys, train tracks and flowing river. There are many additional things to do in the parks such as hiking, mountain biking and cross-country skiing over 235 miles of trails.

This is a very popular trip for day explorers from the city wishing for a nature getaway. You can stay overnight at the elegant and rustic Bear Mountain Inn for your convenience which has been opened since 1915 or in a cozy cabin available for rent.

Another popular place to visit is a tiny, charming Ulster County hamlet in the heart of the Catskill Mountains known as Phoenicia. The main strip has many personalized restaurants, shops, bars, a grocery store, a miniature golf course, art galleries and a gas station which includes a convenience store.

There are even local stories and legends such as in 1934, Gangster Dutch Schultz is rumored to have eaten lunch in this small town before burying some ill-gotten loot on the banks of Esopus Creek, which runs through town. Phoenicia is a great place for taking in the country side, fresh air and culture.

Phoenicia is also a good place to get in some skiing trips to Hunter Mountain and Belleayre Mountain, both only ten miles away. Do not feel left out if you come during the warmer months, because visitors can rent inner tubes from Town Tinker for a relaxing float down the Esopus.

Other local recreation includes horseback riding, fly fishing and hiking to mention a few. You can find a motel room or a cabin from three operators within easy walking distance to restaurants and bars for a convenient stay all around.

Also, Phoenicia is only 129 miles from NYC. This makes it a desirable destination for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and for those who are surrounding New York State and want to get away.

Aside from Bear Mountain and Phoenicia, Finger Lakes is another great location for your next trip. This one is a bit farther from the city as it is 300 miles away.

Therefore, once you get there, you are sure to want to stay for a longer period of time than just a weekend. Several slender lakes form the "hand" of this region in western New York.

What the area is known for though, are its approximately 100 wineries and vineyards, arts and crafts stores, charming villages, antique shops, outdoor recreation and delectable dining. While you are in the area, you can also enjoy many activities like horseback riding, fishing, hunting, camping and even golfing.

New York State is truly a wonderful vacation destination full of natural wonders and homemade comfort. Start planning your next escape today.
