Effective Storage For Seasonal Items

If you are like most homeowners, it can be quite a chore to find storage for seasonal items. You want to keep everything safe, but out of your way. Then, when it is time to retrieve them, you want to locate them easily without having to move a dozen or more boxes. With a little planning, you can organize your storage while keeping all of your possessions safe.

If you prefer, you can use cardboard boxes for storage. Seal them with tape to protect contents from dust and insects. Tape a list on two or more sides of the box so you will know what each box holds. You need not list each item separately, but at least give yourself enough a sufficient clue to the contents.

You may prefer to purchase some plastic bins to use for storage. Consider using different colors to represent the contents. For example, you might use red bins to store Christmas decor, orange bins to hold costumes for Halloween, or green bins to store camping gear. Clear bins allow you to see precisely what is stored within. Using this method saves the necessity of moving and opening several containers before locating the correct one.

There are clear bags on the market into which you place bulky items, like coats or blankets, and then vacuum out the air. This seals the bag and greatly reduces the bulkiness involved. Contents are protected from water, dirt, and pests. Remember that these only reduce the bulk of the items, not their weight. Be careful to guard against placing more weight in a bag than is comfortable for you to lift.

If you need more storage in your garage, you might wish to place shelves against a wall to hold bins or boxes. This lets you easily remove just the container you want and also protects against crushing from boxes stacked on top of one another. Whether you make the shelves yourself or purchase them, they can help you increase your storage while keeping it organized.

Hanging bulky items keeps them safe and out of your way. Screw strong hooks into the studs of the garage wall to make use of space that is typically wasted. Use the hooks to hold things like luggage, backpacks, or tent bags. You could cover them with clear plastic or bags to increase the protection without concealing the items.

Do not overlook the ceiling of your garage as a potential area for the storage of seasonal items. For example, two sturdy, properly spaced hooks let you hang your bicycle. Or construct a small hanging platform that is decked with particle board or plywood. While you might not want to store heavy items on it, it can hold smaller, lighter things. Make you choose a location that allows clearance for your walkway and garage door.

Try to keep similar items together where you will be able to easily see or identify them. Therefore, you would want to store all of your summer gear together and place holiday decorations in a different spot. When it is time to retrieve the items out of self storage, you will eliminate frustration and save time if you are able to locate items more easily.
