Whether you are simply adding solar panels to your present home or building an eco-friendly home from the ground up, in a sustainable community, every step you do to reduce your carbon footprint helps.

There are hundreds of things you can do to make your existing home more eco-friendly.

Here are some tips that may help you when you are considering modifying your current home to be more sustainable and earth-friendly.

1-Add solar panels. This is perhaps the most popular form of ecologically based environmental modification to commercial or personal properties. You will save money on energy bills, and in some climates you can run all of your appliances on solar energy harnessed from panels mounted to your roof. You can install either photovac or thermal panels.

2-Build a wind turbine on your property, which will give you and your home a free, eco-friendly source of renewable energy. When the wind turbine is connected to a generator, it will convert the energy from the moving turbine blades into a form of electrical energy, which you can use in your home. Depending on how much wind your property receives, you can usually run most or all of your appliances on this energy.

3-You can save up to 400% on energy bills by installing heat pumps, although they are most effective if you live in a fairly moderate climate. Heat pumps can be either air source or ground source, and use the difference in outdoor and underground temperatures to moderate the temperature inside your home. Heat pumps can minimize the amount of electricity needed to air condition or heat your home, and can allow a home with solar panels or wind turbines to be completely sustainable.

4-If you simply add extra insulation you will greatly reduce the amount of energy you need to heat or air condition your home. Homes are built today with the absolute minimum amount of insulation necessary to pass inspections. This means that you loose a lot of your air conditioning and your heating through poorly insulated walls, attics, and garages. You can add insulation fairly easily in your attic, loft, exterior walls, or in your garage. Adding attic or garage insulation can be the most economical way of minimizing the carbon footprint of your home.

5-Grow your own organic vegetables in a garden. When you grow your own fruit trees, vines, and vegetables, you are creating food that does not leave any carbon footprint.
