There are a host of jobs available for qualified nurses. To name but a few, nurses can work in hospitals, clinics, on airliners, cruise ships, war zones, cosmetic surgery rooms, operating rooms, emergency rooms, delivering babies, stitching up wounds, giving lectures to junior staff to working for adoption agencies or health centers, in orphanages or intensive care units. These nurses all require one thing. They need to be qualified.

To become a qualified nurse you have to start at the bottom of the rung of the ladder and work up to the top. It is very rank and file, starting with being a nurse aid emptying bed pans and making up beds to a nurse of higher rank who is permitted to give injections, change dressings and give more qualified care. The beauty of nursing is that whatever rank you wish to remain at, you may do so. The higher qualified you become is entirely up to you.

Some nurses who have gone on to become nursing sisters have been very successful in opening nursing agencies and getting people to work under them. These nurses need to be of a high standard as any nurse of a low caliber could harm the reputation of the agency as well as herself.

Being a nurse you are almost guaranteed to be able to find work in any country. Nurses are much sought after worldwide. In some countries nurses are highly paid but in others they are poorly paid, which is shocking for the wonderful services they provide. Nursing staff are appreciated in war zones where they are usually well paid due to the dangers of caring for others in a conflict area.

Care givers in some countries do not need to have a nursing diploma; however, it is preferable that they do. Taking care of the elderly or infirm may easily mean a sudden emergency and a professional nurse on hand would be just what the doctor ordered!

It is also preferable for Au-pairs to be professional nurses. Taking care of young children and babies takes a lot of skill and the family will become very dependent on the person who cares for their children. With such a lot of responsibility it is to the Au-pairs advantage to have a nursing background. They are sometimes fortunate enough to end up traveling with the family or working for royalty or celebrities.

School nurses are important. They become essential to the well-being of school children who are prone to falls, fights, injuries from sports and general malaise. The school nurse decides who needs to go to hospital, back home to their mothers or just need to recover in the surgery for a while. They get to travel with sports teams to events locally and overseas and it can be a great job for those with a love of children.

With the advent of legalized abortion in countries where this was prohibited before, some nurses are finding that they are on the receiving end, needing to perform abortions even when they feel a great personal distaste or disapproval for them. Recently, in an African country a nurse was fired for refusing to perform an abortion.

Men or women can become nurses. Some enjoy working with infants, others with handicapped, physically or mentally challenged children or adults or working with the elderly. Geriatrics is quite a demanding job for any nurse and requires great patience and dollops of kindness. Only if the nurse has these qualities can she possibly be considered suitable for a job in geriatrics.

Becoming a qualified nurse takes a few years. Working in a training hospital brings many benefits with it. Camaraderie with nursing colleagues, hospital staff accommodation and sometimes free medical care are some of the benefits of this laborious but very rewarding job which brings much happiness for a caring type of personality well suited to such a job.
