You can never go wrong when you choose ceramic porcelain tiles for your home finishing. They are not only durable and practical, porcelain tiles can transform an otherwise ordinary home, into a lovely abode.

To choose the right porcelain tiles that would best fit your needs, it is important not to get lost with such terms as "ceramic tiles," "non-porcelain," or "ceramic porcelain." All of these terms refer to a kind of ceramic ware, however they differ in characteristics, application and production method. Ceramic tiles are usually referred to as non-porcelain tiles, and they are easier to cut and have higher water absorption as compared to porcelain. Unlike porcelain tiles, ceramic tiles cannot absorb heavy impact or heavy foot traffic as they have a tendency to chip and abrade.

The term porcelain was coined from the Italian word "porcellana" because of its translucent characteristic similar to the cowrie shell. Porcelain was first developed in China and was exported to Europe between the 17th and 18th century. Beautiful jars and other delicate ornaments were made from porcelain, but the discovery of its base material from soft paste to hard past has made porcelain an important industrial commodity. Porcelain is resistant to high temperatures, resistant to abrasions, and is also non-porous, which allows very minimal water absorption. Today, porcelain is an important material for insulation and is popularly used for dental prosthesis and veneers. That is why porcelain tiles are excellent choices for residential and commercial finishing.

Application of porcelain tiles, are rated according to the Porcelain Enamel Institute (PEI) rating system from PEI Class 1 up to PEI Class 5. If you are looking for the right porcelain tiles to be used for your walls or ceiling, the PEI Class 1 is recommended, because the tiles are not exposed to any impact. You can choose the PEI Classes 2 and 3 for your bathroom tiles, and the PEI Classes 3 to 5 as kitchen and tabletops and as flooring in any part of your home or building according to the impact, foot traffic, or exposure of the area where you will install your porcelain tiles.

Porcelain tiles may be classified into natural, glazed, and polished tiles. The natural porcelain tile normally does not undergo any further finish after it is exposed to high temperature. This type of tile may be referred to as unglazed or through body tile where the colour goes all the way through. The glazed tile is coated with liquid glass that allows the manufacturer to put in a variety of designs and play around with colours. It comes out glossy and is one of the easiest to maintain. They are highly recommended as walls or accents in bathrooms and kitchen. The polished porcelain, on the other hand, goes through a more refined process and comes out looking almost like a granite finish or has a glossy effect without the glaze.

In choosing the perfect ceramic porcelain tiles for your finishing, you must know the colour combination or contrast in the areas where you will install the tiles, and the kind of exposure the tiles may be subjected to.
