The 46-inch Sharp LC-46D65U LCD, which retails for $1,500, doesn’t disappoint. A reasonable cost, energy-saving functions, and superior picture quality all added up to a well-rounded entry-level tv

What’s unique about the D65 series is that its TVs are especially efficient, with very low energy consumption. Based on Razor-sharp, in reality, D65 sets are 20 percent more efficient than their predecessors. All three TVs within the series (a 52- and 42-inch model are offered also) are Energy Star 3. compliant. Which means in addition to drawing much less power when turned off, they're also more effective when turned on, and inside the default image mode. If you are setting up your TV, you must select the “Home” designation to get the benefits from the Energy Star certification. Additionally, an efficient power-saving mode that enables active contrast and active backlight reduces the energy consumption from the tv as you watch it. To make use of this mode, engage it by means of the onscreen menu or simply by pushing the “Power Saving” button about the remote control. Then you're able to select from either standard power saving mode, or advanced. Regular basically judges your video content and adjusts the backlighting accordingly, whilst superior uses a room lighting sensor (called Optical Image Control, or OPC) to adjust the image. The sensor is upon the front bezel, and will automatically boost image brightness exactly where there's high ambient light, and reduce the backlight intensity in a darker room.

Although this is an entry-level flat-panel, it provides a surprising amount of user handle. For example, you will find preset modes for different sources, such as movie, game, PC and others, which, based on Sharp, are the preset ideals for that sort of material. You’ll also find a user mode that lets you customize settings like hue, saturation, and color temperature wish, or even have an ISF-certified technician calibrate your set.

Navigating by means of all these alternatives is pretty straightforward via the onscreen menu system, that is really intuitive, if not super-slick. The menus are boxy and utilitarian, lacking the refinement of other flat-panel manufacturer’s wares. Meanwhile, the remote – the same one included with several Aquos sets – is uncluttered and really simple to use. Aquos Link lets you use it to manage other Razor-sharp devices, like a Blur-ray Player

In general, we would say this set is user-friendly yet high-functioning, the sweetspot that not all manufacturers are able hit. Of course, all that functionality do not mean a thing if the image top quality doesn’t follow suit. Here again, the LC-46D65U doesn't let us down. We dialed inside the image using the calibration Blu-ray Digital Video Essentials, and began our viewing tests.

1 of our favorite new reference Blu-ray discs is Madagascar Escape 2 Africa Although the story isn’t all that compelling, it boasts a consistently pristine and vibrant 1080p 1.85:1 transfer. As well as the movie about the LC-46D65U looked really excellent indeed. The detail, like the hairs on lion manes, was superb. All the colors of the jungles and also the creatures within looked magnificent, with great saturation. Madagascar also attributes some inky blacks. Whilst the LC-46D65U does not feature the darkest blacks ever, they were still excellent. Extremely dark source material, such as the final scene about the Blade Runner Blu-ray, where light and shadow commingle, looked great, with discernable detail, this kind of as facial functions, present in the darker shadows. Broadcast material looked similar in results. We watched bits from the Superbowl from a DVR and despite the sad outcome of the game, the Razor-sharp had no issues with motion lag.

Sharp’s LC-46D65U provides a nice combination of user-friendliness and attributes. Add a great picture to the mix, and you might have what might be considered a bargain at $1,500. Sure, there are several less-expensive 46-inch models obtainable, but you will likely not get as several features. A single major bonus is the LC-46D65U’s power efficiency, which will cause you to feel good about your purchase and save you a little cash over time. And in the current economy, each and every little bit helps.
