I want you to picture this. You are stuck in peak hour traffic not moving. You are tired, bored and longing to get home after an exhausting day at the office. Exasperated you look around at the drivers around you and note that they are all looking how you feel. By chance you glance upward and there right in front of you is a large picture of a holiday island with majestic beaches, fine dining and an expensive bottle of bubbly. Have you now forgotten the perils of the day? See that is how effective a billboard advertisement can be.

A billboard is an effective means of attracting attention to your business. They are located outside in areas that are common thoroughfares for both motor vehicles and people. I am sure you have seen them as you move about a bustling city or have whizzed past on an open road. They are extremely visual with limited words, which are embedded into a catchphrase, and pictures that are awe-inspiring, puzzling, unique or funny.

One only has to look at photographs or images of Tokyo Japan, Piccadilly Circus in London, Times Square in New York or Kings Cross in Sydney to gain an appreciation of their dazzling light displays from their advertising billboards.

It is not surprising that the value of this form of reaching out to more customers dates back as far as 1794. While they may have only been posters at this time through the invention of technology we have seen a huge change in the way in which advertisers use billboards. They now come in the form of mechanical tri-faced or scrolling billboards, where more than one advertisement is rotated on a regular basis, high tech digital billboards, where animations are being incorporated and mobile billboards in which vehicles and boats drive the advertisement around. All forms of the billboard are effective as they are getting the message out into the general public.

Billboards are an effective means of marketing over more traditional formats for a number of reasons. When placing an ad in a magazine, or newspaper for that matter, you are only reaching a limited clientele that they are designed for. Placing them in certain locations ensures that many people view the ad regularly. While they can still be used to influence a specified market, they will not be thrown out, switched over or off and they stand out amongst the crowd.

Contrary to what some people may think, the use of billboards is actually more cost effective than all other forms, with the initial outlay and continuing costs being lower. It also enables a more effective budget to be set up and maintained because these ongoing costs are very structured.

Using billboard advertisements to reach out to more customers is certainly a high impact way of advertising. With some many forms and choices available with respect to this marketing tool it is not astonishing to find that they are becoming more popular as we head deeper into the high technology future.
