The damage that is being caused to the environment due to rampant deforestation and the use of fossil fuels has led to great depletion of the ozone layer as well as the glaciers melting, which in turn is increasing the temperature. This has prompted many governments to come out with stringent anti pollution laws and they are also spreading awareness amongst the people. Many models of fuel efficient cars that are smaller in size are being launched by responsible auto manufacturers and consumers too have realised the importance as well as utility of buying these cars.
The corporate world too is seized of this problem and is trying to do its bit towards this social cause by encouraging its employees to conserve water, use power frugally and encouraging them to use the car pool system to get to work so that there is less carbon emission.
Some companies in order to offset the emission of carbon are going in for renewable energy initiatives. One of them is the tree planting service program that they undertake on a regular basis and also encourage their employees to take part in such activities. They also sponsor such activities and spend funds to maintain specific gardens or open green spaces as part of their corporate social responsibilities. Companies are aware that such actions on their part is good for their brand as well.

What type of trees should they sponsor and what would be the impact?
What is the guarantee that the funds are being used to really plant trees and not being used elsewhere for some other purpose?
What would be the longetivity of the trees planted and would they last the distance?
These questions are very natural and unless companies have clear visibility on these points, not many would be encouraged to lend their hand towards such projects. One can argue that these questions can be addressed through a regular audit that can be conducted by the organization taking the initiative for this activity and as long as they present the results to the company on a regular basis, most companies should be happy and would not mind extending financial help for such green projects.
The problem of whether the trees have been really planted can be addressed through GPS and the sustainability of the planted saplings can be ensured through adequate incentives given to the local population or a nearby school such that awareness towards environment protection begins at an early age.
Such tree planting services can also be introduced to farmers who can supplement the income they get from their food and vegetable crops with income that is provided to them through the carbon sequestered due to their tree planting initiative. They would thus get motivated to spend time and effort towards this activity and would even ensure the sustainability of the saplings since they know they stand to gain substantially in the years to come.
