Portable gadgets and appliances, in particular, are currently enjoying an unprecedented popularity with consumers. Life is becoming more fast-paced, with people wanting to get things done while on the go. Also, mobile access to computing and communication services, infrastructure and even home appliances are becoming more in demand these days.

The telephone is an example of a gadget that has evolved into a smaller but more useful version. For instance, the conventional, landline unit only has call or call waiting features. On the other hand, cellular phones have additional functions such as text messaging, calendar and address book.

Multimedia libraries are also portable nowadays. MP3 players that are smaller than a matchbox can store and play back thousands of songs, while more advanced devices can store and play both music and video. There are also other hand-held devices that allow users to store and view thousands of e-books and other electronic publications, like soft copies of newspaper and magazine articles.

Computing used to be limited to large mainframe machines, but this has changed with the introduction of personal computers. Computers evolved even further into sleek and compact laptops. Now, people can do their work, access the Internet, play games and watch movies from practically anywhere. Desktop PCs may have more storage and may be more configurable, but the portability and comparable performance are significant laptop advantages that make them attractive to consumers.

Portable exercise and fitness equipment, such as treadmills, saunas, hot tubs and massage tables, on the other hand, work in the same way as their counterparts in the gym, but are less expensive and easy to store. Users have the option of doing their routines at the gym or in the privacy and comfort of their home. In fact, the popularity of these products is evident in the number of ads seen on television and other advertising media.

Manufacturers of stoves, refrigerators, sewing machines, washers, dryers, electric fans, water filters, air conditioners, heaters and dehumidifiers often have compact versions of these appliances. These smaller versions are perfect for travelers, campers and renters since they can be easily moved from one place to another. They are also good for people who live in small spaces.

Electronics and appliances are not the only ones with portable versions. Stand-alone toilets are often used in outdoor events such as concerts. Cargo containers are used to create temporary housing and offices, as well as hurricane shelters.

These kinds of items usually come with a smaller price tag and offer convenience and space-saving features. Some consumers are attracted to mini-appliances and small gadgets and devices because of the novelty or because many portables, particularly the electronics, are considered high-tech. This just goes to show that, nowadays, bigger is not always better.
