You may need to be in another city tomorrow. What is the least expensive way to get there? This depends on your transportation mode. Here are some tips and ideas for cheap travel. They may come in handy some time.

Booking in advance

If you need to be somewhere tomorrow, it may be too late. You can still fly, but you may pay a steep price. If you can book at least two weeks in advance, you will get a much better deal.

Standby flights

This is no longer an inexpensive way to fly. In years gone by, someone may find a flight for a fraction of the original cost. This is no longer the case. It may be a good way to find a flight for a reasonable price. However, you will be low on the priority list. You will only get a seat if no one else wants it. If the plane is not full, you will be in luck.

Nonstop flights

Sometimes these flights will be more expensive. This depends on where you are flying to. For example you may fly one airline from your home city to another. If your destination is a hub, a nonstop flight may be the same price as a stopover. If an airline has a hub in a city, many of their flights originate from there.

Best days of the week to fly

Some people will tell you not to fly on Sundays or Mondays. However, this is not always the case. Traditionally Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday are the least expensive days. However, you need to search to be sure. You will often find exceptions to the rule. Never search for a flight by the day of the week only.

Comparison shop

It may take a while to get the least expensive flight. If you book in advance, you will have time to explore all of the options. Here are some to look at.

Airline website

Go to the website of each airline that you are considering. It is not difficult to search for available flights. If your schedule is flexible, you may get a better deal. Make sure and use the "flexible" option when searching. It may bring up several different days of travel. You may be surprised. There may be a huge difference in waiting a day or so.

Travel websites

These sites can be a very good source for reasonably priced flights. Search them thoroughly. After you do, double check your search. Go to the website of the actual airline and see what the price is. Usually the service will have a lower price over the airline. They often get special deals from them. The public is often, not privy to those deals.

Summary

There are many ways to find cheap travel. If you can book a flight in advance, you will save money. Historically, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday are the best days to find a low price flight. This is not always the case. Be thorough in your search. Check several of the many travel websites. When you find a good flight, check the price with the airline. This will give you the lowest cost.
