Have you ever had one of those nightmares where you wake up in a hot sweat, nervous, and paranoid because of the terrible dream that seemed like such a reality? You sit up frantically in bed, looking around to verify that you are actually in your bed, in your home, and not in your nightmare. Maybe your nightmare is even a reoccurring one. And maybe the nightmare involves your disaster of a garage. Your wife has been getting on you for the past few months to organize the junk in the garage, but it is just too daunting of a task. First you will need to organize everything into like categories, and that itself may take days, if not weeks. Then you will need to get some garage storage shelves or even overhead garage storage racks. Just the thought of trying to put those up makes you quiver and want to curl up in a corner and hide. The terribly unfortunate part is that this is not just a nightmare, or a figment of your imagination. This is real life. This is your garage.
First, you will need to tackle to organization. Maybe you can get your wife to help you out with this, seeing as she probably will want a say in what stays and what gets thrown away. Set aside a Saturday morning that you can spend with this first step. Start taking things out of your garage and making piles of like items on your driveway. You will probably have piles for each of the following groups: small garden tools, large garden tools, small home repair tools, large home repair tools, car maintenance supplies, bikes and bike equipment, recreational equipment, and random boxes for storage. If these random boxes are not already organized, you may want to tackle that as well. Then you can clearly label the boxes by their contents, making things a hundred times easier to find when you need something. Once you finish the organizing, you can take a step back and see what kind of boxes or storage device you may need for the things that you have.
Overhead garage storage racks are an excellent way to utilize space that is otherwise wasted in your garage. This would be a great option if you have boxes of storage items or things that you do not need to get to regularly. For those things that you need in a handy location, there are plenty of companies that offering various kinds of garage shelving systems. You can install simple shelves, hooks, and racks that will accommodate all the tool sand equipment that you have in your garage. This project does not have to be a nightmare. Just take a deep breath, and get organizing!
