Interior and exterior painting would be two completely different tasks with two completely different sets of rules. A typical homeowner might not realize the differences and therefore make some grave mistakes while painting. It is important to realize that when one is painting something outdoors and one is painting something indoors, there are several differences that should be noted. All residential painting contractors should know these differences; however, that does not necessarily help the homeowners who want to do the jobs themselves.

First, there is a very big important set of differences between indoor and outdoor paints. The difference is found in the additives. There are various additives added to each and every type of paint. The types of additives that are found in indoor paint are chemicals that make the surface easier to clean. The types of additives that are found in outdoor paint are chemicals that prevent mildew and fading. They also add chemicals to outdoor paint that will make it resistant to chipping or even easier to apply. When someone uses indoor paint for the outdoors, it will most likely not hold up under harsh weather conditions. When someone uses outdoor paint for indoor purposes, it will most likely smell stronger and not clean as easily.

While interior and exterior paints have many differences, they also have a few similarities. It is these similarities that confuse homeowners into thinking it is OK to use them interchangeably. These similarities are obviously the fact that they usually look and smell the same. The differences can only be found over time and on the labeling of the containers that hold them. Ask any home improvement specialist at any home improvement store and they will be able to tell the difference and lead the potential painter in the right direction of where to go.

Of course, one rather obvious difference between painting indoors and painting outdoors would be the preparation. The preparation for painting can be as long and work-intensive as the act of painting itself. Those who are painting indoors need to carefully cover all floors and furniture pieces. They also must tape around each and every edge carefully. When painting outside, taping around edges is still necessary for windows; however, if paint falls on the ground it is not the end of the world.

Weather must also be accounted for as it takes anywhere from one to three days to fully dry and if there is a heavy wind, various items could get stuck and dry on top of the freshly painted surface. Indeed, there are several differences between interior and exterior painting; just be sure to research them before beginning any painting projects.
