While interior and exterior paints have many differences, they also have a few similarities. It is these similarities that confuse homeowners into thinking it is OK to use them interchangeably. These similarities are obviously the fact that they usually look and smell the same. The differences can only be found over time and on the labeling of the containers that hold them. Of course, one rather obvious difference between painting indoors and painting outdoors would be the preparation. The preparation for painting can be as long and work-intensive as the act of painting itself. Those who are painting indoors need to carefully cover all floors and furniture pieces. They also must tape around each and every edge carefully. When painting outside, taping around edges is still necessary for windows; however, if paint falls on the ground it is not the end of the world.
Weather must also be accounted for as it takes anywhere from one to three days to fully dry and if there is a heavy wind, various items could get stuck and dry on top of the freshly painted surface. Indeed, there are several differences between interior and exterior painting; just be sure to research them before beginning any painting projects.
