Nothing changes your life like having a baby. Whether you were anxiously waiting for the opportunity to have a child of your own, or if you were not really expecting to have a baby at the time, you will be faced with challenges and situations that you could never predict. Late nights, early mornings, exhaustion, and fatigue, not to mention giving up basically your entire day to comforting and tending to this precious baby. It is hard work, but it is all paid off when they fall asleep in your arms, or look into your eyes for the first time and smile and you can swear they know that you are their mother. The first laugh, those first clumsy steps, and the first word. Those are the moments that will keep you going. You will probably have no control over your intense desire to spoil your little one with designer jumpers and baby headbands. You will buy more toys than you ever remember having and, chances are, your baby will become attached to one specific toy and not even really care about the rest. But when you look into those innocent eyes, all you can feel besides the desire to gobble them up because of their cuteness is the need to spoil your baby and give them anything they want.

One caution to throw out there when it comes to buying toys: remember that babies are very sensitive and can be easily overwhelmed. Science has proven that there is a delicate balance between lack of stimulus and too much stimulus for your baby. An imbalance either way actually leads to lower mental capacities. The lack of stimulus may be the obvious road, but overstimulating can be just as dangerous. These days, you may have mobiles hanging above their crib that sings songs and flashes lights, stuffed animals attached to the beams of the crib, as well as rattlers and toys inside the crib. Too much stimulus? I think so. Babies can learn so much with simple toys as they observe shape, color, texture, how to hold it, how to manipulate it, and what happens if they toss it over their heads. The fancy toys do not necessarily make your baby smarter or happier. They probably just make you feel better.

So if you want to spoil your child, instead of going with the excessive amount of toys, you could go the dress up way. Everyone loves a cute baby! Crochet baby hats with a big flower are all the rage. Overalls and jumpers are classics. Remember, your desire to spoil your child is your own desire at this point, not theirs. So forget the toys that you think they want. Go for the slip on shoes and monkey pajamas.
