Kitchen remodeling in Atlanta and other cities can be a hard task to overtake. There are a lot of choices to consider and a lot of details to take in. Cabinets seem to make the biggest impression on the kitchen and define the look of the kitchen. It is hard to say which cabinets are best for you and your kitchen unless you know more about the characteristics of each type of wood cabinets. Below are some popular cabinet types and their characteristics.

Maple
Maple is a hard, even grained wood. It is very smooth and has little color variation. Cabinets made of maple are very sturdy, strong, and durable. Maple is generally light in color. If your kitchen remodeling plans are to finish the wood, then maple is a good choice because of its close grain texture. Maple is soon to be a rare wood. The United States Government forestry experts estimate that the present supply of maple will be gone within twenty-five years.

Cherry
Another wood with even graining is cherry wood. Cherry has a reddish color that darkens with time. As cherry wood is exposed to more light it darkens, or reddens faster. Many times cherry is chosen for its smooth texture, straight grain, and beautiful dark color. Cherry wood is light yet strong and hard. The texture of cherry wood helps it absorb finish well.

Oak
Oak often has a straight grain that can be distinguished by rays that reflect light. These rays are very attractive and can form patterns such as pin stripes, fine lines or leafy grains. Oak is very durable and resists wear well. Oak generally has two colors, white and red. White Oak ranges from nearly white to a dark gray-brown. Red Oak ranges from a white cream color to a pale brown tinted with red.

Alder
Alder is a light brown with a yellow or reddish tint. This wood is often used to imitate woods which are more expensive, such as birch or walnut. Most finishes can be used on alder, which makes it a popular wood choice. Though alder is a hardwood, it is one of the softer hardwoods and can dent easily. Alder has an appealing look due to its visible knots and the natural distressing that occurs over time.

These woods are not the only choices available but are found to be the most commonly used. When remodeling your kitchen in Atlanta, or wherever you might be, it is important to choose a wood for your cabinets that matches the remodel design and can have the finish and look you desire overall.
