Left hander's that want to learn to play the acoustic guitar no longer have to do it right haned. In the past, with the scarcity of left handed acoustic guitars even some very famous guitarists had to learn to play right handed. This may have been the case in days gone by but its not anymore. Now days however the story is a lot different. All the major guitar manufactures have plenty of left handed models to choose from.
Find Out What's Comfortable
So you are left handed, you do everything, with your left hand, eat, write, golf whatever, this doesn't mean you will be comfortable playing the guitar left handed. You may very well be better off playing right handed. First you have to figure out which suits you better, right or left handed playing style. There are lots of southpaws that do everything with their left hand, but play the guitar right handed because it's more comfortable for them. Then again there are lefties that started to learn to play right-handed only to find out that playing as a southpaw was more suited to them. Arguably the most famous guitarist of all time Paul McCartney began playing the guitar as a right hander. It wasn't until he switched to left handed that he became a great guitar player, and the rest of the story is now history. Choose the playing style that best suits you.
Make Sure You Start With The Right Instrument
Your first order of businees is to purchase the right guitar. Different types of guitars are better suited for different types of music. You wouldn't go out and buy a Spanish acoustic guitar if you were interested in playing heavy metal rock. This may seem like an obvious over statement but many times the new guitarist has made a similar mistake. Figure out what style of music you want to play and then buy a guitar that is suited to that style of music.
Reading Music
It used to be that if you were a left handed guitarist you had no choice but use guitar music that was written for right handed guitarists. You had to mentally reverse everything so it made sense for the lefty. This is no longer an issue, there are plenty of music books dedicated to the left handed guitarist.
In the end it is your dedication to learning that will make you an accomplished guitarist. The tips I've given you today are just a starting point. They will help you in the beginning but ultimately it's the practise and commitment to learning that will shine through in the end.
