Stair Nosing Makes Evacuations Safer

In an emergency the rule of thumb is to always take the stairs instead of the elevator to exit a building. Whether it is a fire alarm or an electrical failure the proper procedure for an evacuation has always been to use the stairs. As people are often in a hurry and sometimes panic when an emergency arises, building supervisors or construction companies are helping to make the stairwells safe.

Using non skid stair treads to add a rubberized layer of traction to the sometimes slippery smooth concrete, the addition of stair nosing or non slip stair treads allows people to quickly and safely exit the upper floors of a building without fear of slipping or losing their footing on the way down. Even though an emergency may never require a building evacuation there is comfort in knowing that when put into action, the stairwells will be able to safely help every person out of a building.

While it is not every day that a building may be evacuated the constant attention to safety mandates that public buildings all have some sort of anti slip safety treads installed on the stairs and at the entrance or exit to the building. Anywhere that there are stairs made of concrete or that are tiled with a smooth slick surface the potential for an accident is present. However by incorporating a system of safety features like rubber stair nosing, each step can provide a protective grip for the person going up or down the staircase. Instead of encountering a hard slippery concrete step, people that use the stairs can gain traction from the non slip stair treads and make their way more easily to safety.

In shopping centers, schools, libraries, and other public buildings staircases are used more frequently than in office blocks with elevators. Therefore to ensure the continued safety of the people that are ascending and descending the steps there are different levels of protection in the non skid stair treads that can withstand the heavy foot traffic of daily visitors. Where nosing and treads might wear down more frequently, construction contractors typically install heavy duty, more durable non slip stair treads that can take the abuse of hundreds or even thousands of people passing over the steps each day.

For transit stations, schools and hospitals the use of these studier non slip applications helps to reduce slip and fall accidents. Going largely unnoticed by the people that take the stairs every morning and evening, the stair nosing and nonskid stair treads are making it easier to walk across the hard smooth surfaces that can become treacherous when they are wet.
