The big moment has arrived and you need to let go of your baby. Yesterday your child was crawling, today he or she is ready to make friends and go to big school. But how important is preschool? There is increasing evidence that children gain a lot from going to preschool, says Parents advisor Kathleen McCartney, PhD, dean of Harvard Graduate School of Education, in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Children need some sort of group experience before they start kindergarden. This can be achieved by enrolling your child in preschool, even if it is two or three days a week, as that will allow your child to make friends, learn how to share and follow directions. Your child will learn how to raise her hand, take turns and share the teachers attention. All of this helps your child to have good social and behavior skills and if you are potent in developing it than preschool will help you achieve your family goals.
Preschools believe that interactions with peers and caregivers prove critically important for the development of appropriate social behaviors and expression of emotion.
Between the ages from zero to three, social interactions are what motivate a child to learn. To be accepted by peers, children have to learn impulse control which includes learning how to control emotions which can lead to antisocial behaviors. Preschool programs promote collaboration, sharing and communication between not only the children but also adult caregivers that models children the appropriate ways to socialize and express emotions.
Preschool learning is the most pleasurable time in any childs life. At preschool they get to play and learn without any demands in a safe and secure environment with lots of opportunities for enjoyment. They develop physically, mentally, socially and emotionally all at the same time. Children deepen their awareness as learners by planning, questioning and reflecting. Children can learn the ABCs and numbers early in their lives, but not in a formal environment.
Children have the ability to build blocks, listen to stories, dress up in fancy clothes and just have fun. Preschool is not a place to look for academic milestones, but rather it is a place where they do all kinds of activities that are appealing to them and teaches them in a special way. Skills taught in preschool are skills such as language recognition, proper speech, the alphabet, basic mathematical skills and much more. Without these skills, it is very difficult for a child to adjust once formal.
