If you are looking for a covering solution for your floor and walls, then you do not have to look beyond porcelain tiles. Irrespective of whether it is a residential, commercial or industrial property, they have emerged as the most versatile, cost effective and durable option.

These positive properties of porcelain have got a lot to do with their manufacturing process. They are made from a combination of pure clay and minerals. This mix is dry pressed to give it shape and then subjected to firing at high temperatures. The outcome is a tile that absorbs very little water and is thus a hard, durable alternative to natural stone.

Thanks to various advances in technology, the production and manufacture of these tiles have become very sophisticated as well as refined, making it difficult to distinguish them from natural stone. Moreover, the sheer variety and range that is available in various colours, sizes and patterns have made them the automatic first choice for many architects and home developers and it does not matter whether the setting is contemporary or traditional. It is this versatility coupled with strong technical attributes that gives them the edge over other covering options for the floor or walls.

Porcelain tiles are also resistant to frost, can tolerate even sub zero temperatures and therefore can be used for external cladding at conservatories and for landscaping in very cold conditions. Flooring gets a new life with slip resistant and well finished tiles that are extremely easy to maintain. Thanks to its low water absorption, it is the preferred option for external cladding as well as tiling in swimming pools.

Let us look at some of the major attributes of these tiles in some detail:

a) The non porous nature of these tiles make them absolutely impervious to water and therefore you do not need to use sealants or any other type of leak-resistant chemicals. Since water cannot pass through, the tiles do not get damaged and are able to retain their lustre for a long time. If the area gets flooded, the tiles only need to be dried.

b) They are very strong and therefore chip resistant. They are even preferred to granite for use in external driveways and showrooms with a lot of footfall.

c) Since surface glaze is minimal, they are pretty resistant to any kind of abrasion and that is why are able to retain the lustrous appearance for a long period of time. That is also why they are preferred at public places like airports, shopping malls, restaurants and so on.

d) As compared to natural stone, you do not have to spend on any waxing or sealing materials to maintain them. They only need to be cleaned with soap and water and therefore lead to savings over a period of time in terms of labour and material.

e) Finally, they are very environmentally friendly as there is minimal waste generated and there are virtually no chemicals or resins used for water proofing and so on.
