In one way or another, on all types of budget, we all love a bit of DIY. That feeling of a room being new and fresh and clean has often stopped people feeling the need to sell up and move for a change of scenery and lets face it, in this climate that probably is not the best option.

So, you are not moving house but you do need a change. And, as they say, a change is as good as a rest. Even the best maintained room will look tired over time, its inevitable. Paintwork becomes scuffed and discoloured through sunlight. Wallpaper gets caught or curled. Curtains become heavy with dust and discolouration. Cushions become flat and all the little nic naks we put in our rooms to make them feel more homely, such as candles, become last seasons colours and seem unfitting all of a sudden.

So, what effective measures can we take to spruce up a room? Well start with a base colour that you fancy and do not think that you have to stay safe. You can be bold if you want to, particularly this time of year. Pick your accent colour but remember not to overdo the application of it. Maybe just put the colour on one wall or pick a bold wallpaper pattern and again, apply it to one wall only leaving the rest of the room a neutral shade. No, do not just think cream or white. Consider all shades of the coffee and cream palette to add warmth.

Once you have got colour on the walls in either paint or paper format, check your window treatment. A new lease of life here will make a hugely underestimated difference. Winter is horribly dark and depressing so choose a smart Roman blind to ensure you get maximum light in throughout the day. These blinds fold up neatly on a cord pulley system out of the way and help to reduce the clutter often found around a window.

If your room is predominantly plain, consider a Roman blind with a pattern or decorative edging to add a little interest. With a beaded edge, when we do get a little sunlight, it will filter through the beds and draw the eye to the new interest in the room.

Roman blinds are a lovely accompaniment to any interior design scheme. Whether you choose to go traditional with period features or minimalistic or even retro trendy there will be a Roman blind design applicable to your tastes.

If you can get away with keeping your carpet, make sure you give it a birthday by cleaning it or better still, find a professional carpet cleaner to come in and do the job. It will be quicker and more effective. Bare floorboards also look more stunning after a new lick of varnish or polish adding a warm glow to your floors and also consider adding a warm, brightly coloured rug for that little extra dimension.

Finally, look at your extras. Several new candles of various sizes, grouped together on a stand can look impressive as well as helping to add to the ambience of a room as can some fresh flowers. Maybe some new prints for the wall or a few well chosen ornaments and you will be pleasantly surprised how lifted you feel in general.
