Several years ago, my brother passed away in California, and my wife and I had to fly out from New York to take care of his personal affects. While he was only in his forties, he had managed to accumulate a lot of worldly possessions, and we needed to move them out of his apartment as quickly as possible. The apartment manager was very kind, but the fact remained that the place needed to be cleaned and made ready for a new tenant, and so while it was quite liberal, we were working under a deadline. We were distraught and just trying to function as best we could under the circumstances. My mother was there as well, and together we worked through the arrangements for his funeral and sorting through his clothes and other possessions as quickly and as efficiently as possible.
We packed everything ourselves and loaded them up into a rented moving van. The sorting and packing was hard enough, and with the expense of the mortuary and funeral, the price that we paid for the one-way moving van felt even more excessive. Had we the ability to bring the van back after the move, it would not have been as bad, but since it was going to be a one way trip, we paid more than double the costs. Worrying about money at a time like that might seem petty, but truth be told, the emotional struggle was only made worse by the amounts we had to pay. I really wish we had known about long distance moving companies at that time. It would have been nice to have someone else do all of the packing and moving so that we could have sorted through it later, and looking at the rates now, it would have actually saved us money to have used professionals. We could have then spent that time trying to comfort one another, his fiance, and friends, instead of sorting through all of that stuff.
I hope I am never faced with a similar responsibility again. Once really was enough, as far as I am concerned, but should I or anyone else I know find themselves in the same situation, I am definitely going to recommend using a long distance moving company to get the job done. I would even consider helping them pay for it, because at times like that, helping those that mourn shoulder the material burden is really the best thing that you can do.
