Most vehicles use the combustion of oxygen and gasoline to power themselves. Therefore, automobiles need fossil fuels to work efficiently; the need for this type of propellant has been an underlying cause of conflict and strife between the United States and other countries.
Because of this and because the product must be imported, gas prices have been on a steady increase since the end of the twentieth century. Many suppose that wars like Desert Storm and the more recent issues with Iraq and Afghanistan have been made worse because of the needed fossil fuels that are found and harvested in the Middle East.
Burning gas can also create a good deal of pollution and smog within the air. Automobiles themselves are the main cause of air pollution, which is the release of toxic gases like carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxide into the atmosphere.
Many even suspect that this release of gases is the main contributor to the whole that has formed in the ozone layer. A number of scientists and environmentalists feel that one day, if humans do not lessen the amount of toxins released into the air from cars, oxygen will be too depleted to sustain life.
During the year 2008, air quality was named as one of the worst factors in the United States. There are many who feel that the problem will only get worse if human beings do not get rid of their dependency on oil.
Cars are not the only form of transportation that makes use of gasoline. Airplanes would definitely not be able to create enough power to fly without it.
It is definitely very important to our society and has made long distance travel easier and faster. However, making use of this type of fuel definitely has its drawbacks.
The product itself is very expensive to mine and transport from other countries, so it is expensive for consumers in the United States to purchase and use to power engines. Finding access to it can also be a problem on occasion.
When droughts occur, say when a gasoline line breaks or there is not enough to go around and power all of the vehicles that is needs to, things can get very dangerous and scary. In the type of situation where natural disasters destroy underground lines and tanks, people would not be able to fill up in order to get away from danger and find a safe place to be with family.
A situation like this would result in long lines at gas pumps and, possibly, fighting over and stealing resources. America can beat its dependency on fossil fuels by finding different and more efficient ways to power the machines that transport them.
Many different substances and methods have been tried when it comes to creating power. In fact, lots of diesel vehicles have begun using bio-diesel.
Some can also be powered by vegetable oils and lipids, if the engine has been designed to burn these types of substances. Diesels that take vegetable oils for power usually burn clean and do not create any problems with pollution.
Society is also trying to fix air quality issues through the use of alternate power methods. In fact, there are a number of different cars today that can be powered with the help of electricity, as opposed to gas.
They are not exactly built for distance, but are great for those who wish to lessen their usage of toxic substances and become more efficient while driving to work, running errands, or visiting family. These are a great option for those who want to reduce their carbon footprint and not spend a lot of money on fuel for their combustible vehicles.
Many began as golf cart style prototypes; however, with time, some smaller scale sports car and sedan automobiles have been created. Many need the mixture of gasoline plus electricity to get power, but they still use less harmful substances than the regular types.
Some have even been designed to gain their energy through solar panels. These deliver the electrons to a generator or plug, which is what the car is plugged into.
The generator is able to charge the battery and create an ignition that can start it. The year 2010 has brought a new prototype of a vehicle that solely uses the sun for propelling.
Though these are in the early stages, it is hopeful that one day they may been a widely available choice of transportation. Becoming more efficient and finding ways to get from place to place without the use of gas is very important to the future of America and the rest of the world.
