I remember when I was a kid, dreaming about the home of the future. All of the science fiction programs of the time had something like it; a robot that took care of all of the cooking and cleaning, or the ability to control almost every aspect of the home from a simple touch pad. Someone at the front door? No problem. Just hit a button and the intercom system would display who was there on a view screen. Incoming telephone call? They could be answered from any room in the house with a simple voice command. What about dinner? That could be automated as well. Just tell the kitchen what you wanted to eat and at what time, and it would make it all for you. I saw this scenario so often that I fully expected to live in a home like that someday; that it would be the most common thing for everyone in the country to have an automated home, and for us all to live happily ever after.
Well, the automated home did not come as quickly as I expected. I thought by the year 2000, we would all have flying cars as well. I doubt that something like that will happen, but the automated home is something well within our reach today. Homes can be equipped with alarm systems, climate controls, sound and video systems, and even ovens and dishwashers that can be preset, operated, and controlled all with the push of a button on a custom made touch panel. The panels can be strategically installed throughout the house and even camouflaged to virtually disappear into the woodwork. Wireless remotes and computer desktop systems can be integrated to make the whole thing even more convenient. Even more amazingly, the whole system can be controlled while the occupants are on vacation on the other side of the world, ensuring that there are no surprises; that they can see their homes through their own security systems, and can ensure that nothing is happening in the home that does not meet with their approval.
We really do live in a miraculous time, and the automated home is even more amazing in reality than it is in science fiction. It makes one marvel at what the future may hold, and even if flying cars are not in it for the general public, there will probably be something bigger and better for future generations to behold.
