Photography can be used in a variety of useful ways. It is used to create decorations, to create memories, to capture details of certain instances, to identify a person, and to advertise a product.
A lot of special care and consideration goes into taking a photograph, particularly a photograph that is meant to represent a product in a positive light. With so many images around you every day you may not have realized this.
However, a lot more goes into photography than simply pointing the camera and shooting at the right time and in the right place. The first thing you will need to do if you hope to get into product photography is purchase the right equipment.
Even though it seems like you will never use half of the settings on the camera and like you are paying way too much for something you think has all of the settings you need at $100, it is definitely worth it to payout several hundred dollars more in order to purchase a quality camera. If you do not end up using half of the settings, the settings you do use will capture things with incredibly better quality.
You will need a good lens, at least mid zoom capabilities, a fast lens, and a tripod in addition to a good camera. An excellent photo editing program is likely to also be a very good investment.
Once you have the correct equipment, you will want to position the product so that you can capture some of the white background behind it. If you are too close to the product, people will feel like they cannot see the whole product which will automatically lead them to believe that the company is trying to hide something.
Since they deem the company as untrustworthy, they will not purchase the item. In addition, the white background brings the attention and focus into the middle where the product is.
Companies also like the white back ground because they can easily cut out the product from the white background in Photoshop to use in other areas if they decided that they would like to. In some cases the product may not show up well against a white background.
For example, a white purse would probably fall into this category. In these instances you may want to try using a black background.
However, the principle is the same. A plain, non-distracting background is always the best for product photography.
The next thing you will need to turn your attention to are the lights. Your background will do little good if you have poor lighting that results in visible wrinkles in the material.
In addition, the product will look much better if it is evenly lit. Harsh shadows lend a dark element that also leads people to subconsciously believe that something is being obscured, even if they can still see the product fully.
By managing the proper lighting correctly, the product will seem to be more out in the open and it will seem that nothing is being hidden. It is very important to build a certain level of trust with the potential consumer this way.
The next thing you will have to look at is the framing of the product. With products it is very important to be on the same level. Try to zoom in so that people can see the details, without zooming is so far that you cannot see the whole product.
Weird angles can also give the impression that you are trying to hide something. Try to shoot straight shots on the face of the product so people can actually see what it is and not get a weird perspective on how it is shaped.
Along with framing, it is also important to be aware of where the product is placed. The product should be placed a little in front of the background instead of right against it.
This will help the background to be more out of focus and the attention to be centered more on the product. A wide aperture is the best way to keep the product sharp while the background is out of focus.
Of course, there will be moments when you will want to break some of these rules. Do it and compare the result to those which followed all of the rules.
Over time you will learn when it is okay to break the rules and when it is not okay to break the rules. As a photographer, you are an artist and you will need to put yourself into your work.
