Many of us have often wondered how things were in the times of our great grandparents. The atmosphere, the way they managed their lives, the way they used to interact socially, the items they used and so on. Unfortunately, technology had not advanced then to the extent that they could capture those moments. Yes we do have access to photographs and the odd item handed down through generations, but by and large, the memories of those times passed away with them and we can only ponder about what may have been. The loss is much greater when you consider that we are left bereft of the many valuable lessons and learning that would have made us richer in knowledge.

Fortunately for us living in todays times, things are much better. We have a responsibility towards generations following us and that is to make sure that we pass on not only the memories associated with our generation but also make it convenient for them to access whatever we can manage to salvage or restore memories and items of generations preceding us.

The above activity is possible due to the immense advancements in technology. Through family social network sites, it is convenient to store memories in the form of photographs, videos, and writings about the persons who have passed away. It is a tough and tedious task trying to put together or piece together those invaluable memories of the generations before us but the good news is that it is possible to do so and if we can make a start at this stage, we would have done the generations following us a great service. They would have a lot of valuable information to cherish and carry on the good task initiated by us and that is how a family tree can be brought to life and preserved for posterity.

So how can this be done?

Well, family social network sites provide you with the opportunity to interact with various members of your family, form groups and share precious memories by way of thoughts, photos, and videos pertaining to daily life experiences. This would thus be a private club where only family members are allowed to enter and contribute. This repository of information would be a huge benefit for future generations to access and savour. You would also be able to put up recorded messages, write letters that would be saved for generations following us to look at and appreciate long after we have passed away.

It is the same with family heirlooms. Imagine a granddaughter looking at a coffee cup or pitcher of water and wondering how it would have been for her grandmother to take that break after a hard days work in the kitchen or office. Just being able to touch those objects would bring back a flood of memories and emotions that are priceless. While these objects are mere objects to a stranger, they represent a gift that transcends the value of those items in monetary terms and are very useful in helping the generations of today to momentarily lapse into the past and relive those memories.
