When I was younger, I used to ride my bicycle far more than I drove my car. Living in one of the larger cities in the nation, a bicycle was actually more convenient most of the time. There was always space in the bike rack when I got back to my apartment, and I never needed to struggle to find a parking space whenever I arrived somewhere. As long as there was something to lock my bicycle to, I had a parking space. The savings in fuel and parking meters was also very nice, as I was not really making that much money and did not want to have to spend it on gas, oil, and maintenance for a car.

That did not mean that I did not have to take the bike into a bicycle shop every so often. Putting that much wear and tear on a bike every day meant that I had to keep a keen eye on the wheels and spokes, let along on the crank shaft. Once, I had to replace the seat because it got a little too worn to be comfortable. The owners of the shop were great people, and as we got to know each other, it seemed like they went out of their way to accommodate me. They had a real passion for bicycles, and one of the services they had available was the building of custom bikes. That came in handy when I wanted to make some modifications to my bike to make it a little more energy efficient. They knew their stuff, and with their help, my bike was more streamlined and a lot easier to ride.

I have since moved away, but still have a love for bikes. I have kept in touch with that bike shop to get the inside information on what bikes they recommend, if there is anything that I can do to the ones that I currently own to make them either look better or ride more smoothly. When you find experts in your life, it is good to keep in touch with them, because you never know when that contact is going to come in handy and prove to be useful. Whenever I am back in town, I find the time to stop by just to see what is going on and catch up with the owners. It is nice to be able to go someplace where you are remembered well and treated the same way.
